Capital Dance Project Returns to the Crest Theater

Listen: CDP's Frances Chae, Melissa Arendt, and Melinda Arendt.

The Capital Dance Project (CDP) proudly returns to the stage for their first live performance since 2019! The company celebrates its 7th year of innovative dance programming this summer with an expanded artist residency program, performances, and outreach efforts. 30 Sacramento artists will participate in a four-week residency combining dance, choreography, art, tech, and live music culminating in the sixth edition of the highly acclaimed Behind the Barre: Made in Sacramento!

The performances will include 9 world premieres on Saturday, September 18th at 7:30 PM and Sunday, September 19th at 2:00 PM at the historic Crest Theatre. Behind the Barre pairs CDP's 9 resident choreographers with Sacramento's most exciting visual artists and musicians for an inspiring multi-media performance.

This year’s collaborating artists include Melissa Uroff, Elaina Florence Joy Swanson, Paige McCafferty, Melissa Arendt, Melinda Arendt, and more to be announced! The performance includes stunning introductory films by longtime CDP collaborator Natalie Manning, giving the audience a glimpse into the collaborative and creative process before seeing each new work. Behind the Barre also celebrates local makers, artists, and businesses with a Maker's Mart in the lobby before the show and during intermission.

Local brews and wine will be provided by Behind the Barre sponsors New Helvetia Brewing Company and Bailarin Cellars, with all beer and wine proceeds supporting CDP! With a mission to uplift the spirit of the Sacramento community through the performing arts, CDP has committed to offering 200 youth from under-served communities free tickets to attend Behind the Barre. For many, it will be their first time attending a live performing arts event.
