A Bill to Repeal Prop 47 Fails in Assembly Committee

Tuesday Assemblyman Kevin Kiley's bill  AB 1599 (Kiley/Gallagher/Patterson) which would have given voters the chance to reassess Proposition 47: failed in the Assembly Public Safety Committee,

Just prior to the hearing the bill’s lead authors – Assemblymembers Kevin Kiley, James Gallagher, and Jim Patterson – held a press conference with legislators, victims’ advocates, law enforcement, and small business leaders on the steps of the State Capitol calling for the repeal of Prop. 47. Speakers included Crime Victims United President Nina Salarno Besselman, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire, and Roseville Chamber of Commerce CEO Rana Ghadban.

California voters approved Proposition 47, called The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act, billed as a criminal justice reform that reduced simple drug possession and some property crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, thereby realizing cost savings that would be reinvested in preventative and county-based services.
