The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, established in memory of fallen 9/11 FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, holds its second annual Sacramento Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk on November 5, 2022, at William Land Park.
The Sacramento 5K will honor and celebrate local first responders – firefighters, police, EMTs, and paramedics, as well as the military service members who serve, sacrifice, and protect us every day.
This is a family-friendly event and is open to all. Strollers, wagons, and wheelchairs are welcome, as are friendly dogs. The registration link is t2trun.org, and then select the Sacramento 5K button.
The Sacramento 5K Run & Walk is one of more than 70 events in a national series of 5Ks and Tower Climbs held around the country in support of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, and will raise funds that support the Foundation’s three programs:
· Fallen First Responder Program: Providing mortgage payoffs for fallen first responders and who leave behind young families.
· Gold Star Family Home Program: Providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star Families with small children.
· Smart Home Program: Building adaptive homes for the military’s most catastrophically injured service members.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation has been actively involved in supporting fallen heroes in the greater Sacramento area. The Foundation paid off the mortgage of Placer County Marine Capt. John Sax, who died in a military helicopter crash in the SoCal desert in June. Additionally, the charity paid off the mortgages of fallen Sacramento County Sheriff Deputy Adam Gibson in February 2021, fallen Stockton Police Officer Jimmy Inn in August 2021, fallen El Dorado County Sheriff Deputy Brian Ishmael in October 2019, and fallen Newman Police Officer Corporal Ronil Singh in January 2019.
Several of the family members of those lost heroes will be at the 5K event, and some will be speaking to participants before the race. Local singer Kristen Brown will perform the National Anthem, with Junior ROTC cadets from McClatchy High School performing Honor Guard duties. Local sponsors include AMR Ambulance, Spare Time Sports Clubs, Carpet One locations all across Northern California, among others.
At every Tunnel to Towers 5K, replica badges representing each of the 343 firefighters killed on 9/11 will be offered to participants who are encouraged to select a badge and wear it in his or her honor.
