Local NICU Hosts Baby Read-a-Thon to Encourage Family Reading

September is Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Awareness and National Literacy Month, and a study found that the quality and quantity of book reading in early infancy influences children’s vocabulary and early reading skills.

Dignity Health Mercy San Juan Medical Center (MSJ) is the only hospital in the Sacramento area and only one of two north of the Bay Area to join more than 150 hospitals around the world to promote reading to babies in its NICU. The annual Babies With Books NICU Read-a-Thon started on September 11 to build NICU morale and demonstrate the importance of families reading to their infants. Last year, MSJ placed in the top 30 of all participants and has a goal of being in the top 10 this year.
