While the Park Fire, Thompson Fire, Franklin Fire, Bridge Fire, and the 2024 winter storms may feel like events from another season, many Sacramento-area and Sierra foothill homeowners are still dealing with the aftermath — including damaged homes, delayed insurance processes, and months-long rebuild timelines.
Despite the time that has passed, these families have continued making mortgage payments on homes that were damaged or left uninhabitable. For households already balancing rising costs, this long-tail financial pressure is significant and, for many, still ongoing as they enter 2026.
To help close this gap, the State of California has made $100 million in mortgage relief funding available through the CalAssist Mortgage Fund, offering up to $20,000 in non-repayable assistance for eligible homeowners. Importantly, residents impacted as far back as early 2024 may still qualify — a critical detail many families don’t realize.
With the Sacramento region at the center of wildfire recovery, population shifts, and housing instability, this program offers meaningful financial relief to homeowners who are only now reaching the point in their recovery where additional support could determine whether they remain in their homes.
