Caltrans will honor 195 men and women who have died on duty at its annual Workers Memorial event at 11 a.m. on April 23 at River Walk Park in West Sacramento. The annual ceremony pays tribute to the sacrifice made by maintenance workers, landscape personnel, traffic engineers, and other employees who have been struck and killed in highway work zones.
This year, the memorial has added importance thanks to an expanded “Slow Down Move Over” law that went into effect on Jan. 1. Now, motorists are required to move over a lane if possible – and reduce speed in all cases – when anyone is stranded or working on the side of the road. This includes broken down travelers, emergency personnel, tow truck operators, Caltrans vehicles, and others.
