KFBK Morning News Show Recap - Friday September 24th

Leads:

  1. California is considering a plan to add COVID to a list of mandatory vaccinations for school children ages 12 and up. Dr. Mark Ghaly, California's top health official told reporters the state is having that conversation, but he added, "no definitive action is being made at the moment." Ghaly said the state is looking at the data to see who can be "protected through vaccinations."
  2. A South Sacramento Little League is crying foul over a proposed "homeless site" adjacent to their baseball fields. Airport Little League's Joanne Jauregi points out that safety is already an issue as it is around their ball fields on 24th Street and 48th Avenue. However, Councilmember Jay Schenirer claims it's not a done deal, as sites are still being vetted and if they do want to proceed, it could still be another year before they'll begin any community discussion about moving forward.
  3. More than 50 Sacramento-area students are still trapped in Afghanistan. Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent Jorge Aguilar says eight students and their families remain in Afghanistan. Raj Rai with San Juan Unified confirms over 40 students are still stuck there. That number has gone up from the initial estimate.
  4. The Sacramento Zoo may be moving to Elk Grove. Officials announced Thursday they're eyeing 60-acres off Kammerer Road for the zoo's new location. It's been a four-year search for the Sacramento Zoo, looking to upgrade from its less than 15-acre lot in Lank Park. If selected, Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen says the new site will allow the zoo to become world-class while honoring its nearly 100-year history and heritage in the Sacramento Region. Zoo and City leaders will now take six months to evaluate the Elk Grove location.
