- California is working to expand educational opportunities for children across the state. Governor Newsom signed a Pre-K and K through 12 education package. The more than $123 billion plan provides free, high-quality, universal pre-kindergarten for all four-year-olds, beginning incrementally in 2022-23 and will be fully implemented by 2025-26. The education plan also invests $10 million to bolster dual language immersion programs and nearly $2 billion to create college savings accounts for low-income students, English learners and foster and homeless youth.
- The Department of Justice has announced it is investigating threats made against teachers and school board members nationwide. A directive that comes amidst a surge in confrontations at local school board meetings over topics like masking, vaccine mandates and racism. California School Boards C-I-O Troy Flint sees it as increasing hostility at meetings that are normally "sleepy affairs." Meanwhile, the founder of California-based "Let Them Breathe," Sharon McKeeman, says right now parental concerns about student's mental health are at an all-time high. She advocates for parents to continue to speak up, but adds, it must be respectful on both sides.
