- The city of Sacramento may soon clear homeless encampments, and offer an alternative, required housing. Council members are scheduled to discuss the ordinance in today's meeting. It's called "a right to housing with a parallel obligation to accept it." If passed, the measure's enforcement would be handled by the Department of Community Response, not the Police. It would also require the city to have all 20 new proposed sites for housing open by 2023.
- Alternative education options continue to be on the rise with many parents, looking outside the public school system. Locally there are new "private education associations" popping up, like Roseville's Liberty Learning, a privately-funded, independent organization which can establish its own operating guidelines.
- At least 70% of California residents have gotten at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. The Los Angeles Times reports the state reached the benchmark over the weekend, almost eleven months after the first shots were administered. About 8% of children ages five-through-eleven have gotten the first dose since the vaccine was approved for that age group on November Fourth. More than 63% of Californians are fully vaccinated.
- Two local ski resorts are pushing back their opening dates. Northstar California and Heavenly ski resorts cite warm temperatures for making the decision. Both resorts had planned on announcing their opening dates over the weekend, but changing weather forced delays. Northstar is still inviting the public to enjoy its village facilities, while Heavenly is opening its gondola and Tamarack Lodge on Friday. Officials hope to have the new season's dates next week.
