- California's first ever Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris is resigning. Governor Gavin Newsom's office confirmed the news Tuesday. In a statement, Governor Newsom said they will continue the important work she led, including initiatives on equity, mental health, and childhood development. Newsom did not announce her replacement yet.
- The Department of Water Resources says more winter storms are needed after a dry month of January. The second manual snow survey of the winter season took place Tuesday morning at the Phillips Station snow course off of Highway 50. Officials measured a snow depth of 48.5 inches with a snow water equivalent of 19 inches. The numbers for that specific location stand at 109-percent of the February 1st average. The overall statewide Sierra snow pack has dropped to 92% of average. There is no rain in the forecast through the first two weeks of February.
- Governor Gavin Newsom is announcing $45 million in awards for two new Homekey projects in Sacramento and Los Angeles that will provide 170 housing units for people exiting homelessness. California has now awarded $323 million for 1,208 units across 14 projects statewide as part of the expanded Homekey program - a key component of the Governor's $12 billion plan to tackle homelessness.
