A group of Republican lawmakers in California are urging legislators end the State of Emergency.

There is a renewed push by Republicans at the Capitol to "reign in the power" of Governor Newsom. According to Republican lawmakers, for nearly two years Governor Newsom has issued executive orders with no oversight or approval from the legislature in a self-declared State of Emergency, and Democrats at the Capitol refuse to challenge the Governor's orders. Republicans have scheduled a news conference tomorrow where they're expected to announce a new plan to bring an end to the State of Emergency and the Governor's unchecked powers.

A key figure for California Republicans in this issue is Assemblyman James Gallagher, who will take over as California Assembly Minority leader after a unanimous vote from his fellow Republican members on Tuesday. Assemblyman Gallagher replaces Marie Waldron, who was the previous leader for around 4 years. Assemblyman Gallagher has been vocal in his opposition to Governor Newsom's decisions for the state of California and the policies put in place during the State of Emergency ruling, and even sued the Governor over his executive orders involving the pandemic. Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, R-Rocklin, has also been a harsh critic for the Governor, taking Governor Newsom to court last year arguing he was abusing his power by implementing COVID-19-related mandates and restrictions

California has been under a State of Emergency since March 4th, 2020.
